Jon started his Costco career at Thurrock and returned as manager in 2016, since when it has become the most profitable Costco warehouse in the country. With a focus on attracting new and returning traders through understanding marketing, staff training, merchandising and nurturing member relationships, Jon has led the team to impressive year-on-year growth. He’s a hit with his 380-strong team, asking for and implementing their ideas for the business.

Described as “the powerhouse behind Bidfood’s Scottish business,” in the last financial year Jon has delivered sales and profit results well ahead of budget, as well as topping the company’s online sales performance. He has been instrumental in improved customer satisfaction scores for telesales, deliveries and customer services. Jon has shown great commitment to his local community as well as customers, suppliers and colleagues.

Bestway Wholesale

Bestway’s externally-measured customer satisfaction scores increased each quarter to an all time high in June. With the creation of a Direct to Store service for retailers, the addition of Bestway Vans Direct, two new depots and the acquisition of Conviviality Retail, it’s been a busy year. This activity has secured an estimated 4,500 wholesale and retail jobs, and offered better advice, better support and better communication to the retail customer base

JJ Food Service

This year JJ Foodservice introduced an Amazon-style notification system to give customers an estimated time of arrival of orders. The technology calculates the position for the delivery vehicle and traffic conditions to give an arrival time that is accurate to the minute. Back-of-house telematics has helped increase miles per gallon and reduce idling time, with a forecast to save the business £30k a year in fuel costs.

Bidfood, Edinburgh

Edinburgh has achieved phenomenal results this year with growth far exceeding budget. It has seen better credit note percentages, stock loss ratios and cage control results, and topped Bidfood’s depots for online sales. They are championing Fairshare and donating surplus stock to the charity’s Edinburgh warehouse. With its own in-house chef, the team has designed and built a customer experience centre promoting Scottish dishes.

Michael James Ward, Caterite

After 38 years in the kitchen as a chef, Mike is not taking life easy, as he hasbrought his skills to the deli counter and transformed the presentation of the fixture, as well as improving deliveries from suppliers to reduce waste, and introducing bespoke cheeseboards. He encourages drivers and telesales operators to be mindful of anomalies in orders to prevent returns, with an incredible reduction in credits as a result.

Janette Loughrey, Bidfood, Wakefield

Jan is described as a true credit to the team at Wakefield, and a favourite with customers. She’s made a huge impact on the telesales team and the business since joining in 2014. Her ledger has gone from strength to strength, increasing the number of buying customers. Her ‘care, share and dare’ attitude impresses customers and colleagues, and her role as the company’s main touch point with her 142 customers is one she’s proud of, and very good at.

Shaun has been at Booker Redruth for 26 years, and his customers love him for getting the job done quickly and professionally, always with a smile on his face. He is always willing to do extra shifts when needed and happily takes on new drops. His employer says his friendly demeanour, drive and professionalism is infectious and has a positive impact on the whole team.

This year has seen JJ increase turnover significantly, launch a credit card to improve customers cash flow, introduce an Amazon-style delivery notification service, host ten trade days to offer caterers huge savings, and help customers improve their green credentials with the new Eco-Packaging category. The company has also invested heavily in e-learning to provide better service.

Joyce Johnston, JW Filshill

Joyce has only been with the business for 18 months but the positive impact she has had has been incredible. She identifies issues quickly and pulls everyone together with an infectious ‘can do’ attitude. She has instigated daily meetings with all departments and created a framework for communication to customers which has hugely increased telephony service levels.


Green Wholesaler of the Year


In the past year Brakes has introduced several initiatives to raise standards includinga plan to deal with problem plastics and becoming the first wholesaler to introduce Gas to Liquid to replace diesel in its London fleet. It is also the first wholesaler to sign up to WRAP’s UK Plastics Pact, it has driven up recycling rates, and it has achieved its 2020 target of a 20% carbon reduction two years ahead of schedule.

Katie Sillars, Bidfood, Scotland

Despite joining Bidfood just 18 months ago, Katie has made her mark in Scotland where he sales acumen, passion for innovation and a desire to tell compelling food stories is making real impact. She has built relationships with local suppliers and increased net sales with the launch of a Scottish food and drink range. She also runs Bidfood’s Scottish export initiative. She’s an ambassador for Bidfood in the industry, and mentors food and drink start-ups in her spare time.
