FareShare: The power of food

Wholesalers are supporting FareShare to redistribute food to those in need. Here’s how you can play a part

The statistics on food waste in the UK are staggering. A shocking 4.6 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away each year. FareShare is the UK’s leading food redistribution charity, working with the food industry to deliver good-to-eat surplus food to thousands of local charities and community groups across the UK.

WHOLESALERS’ SUPPORT

In the last year, surplus food from the wholesale sector has accounted for more than 1,000 tonnes of food into FareShare: this is equivalent to around 2.4 million meals. This includes food provided by independent wholesalers and those operating nationally.

FareShare works closely with FWD and SWA and with all the major wholesale buying groups. Members of the charity’s food team often attend trade shows and collect samples as surplus after these events – all good-to-eat food – which is sent out via its network to more than 8,000 charities and community groups nationwide.

FareShare is keen to work with more wholesalers. The organisation can accept any food type – ambient, chilled, frozen, fresh with 48 hours life remaining, catering packs and retail packs, including many after the BBE dates – plus good-to-eat surplus food including damaged cases, seasonal and discontinued stock, and cancelled orders.
