In the spotlight… Clare Bocking

In our new column that shines a light on female leaders, Clare Bocking, Chair of WiW and MD of Immediate Impact, chats about her career so far

WN: Can you describe yourself when you were younger and just starting out in your career?

I’ve always been driven, optimistic and energetic. I love a challenge, so I have always tended to say yes to new opportunities and experiences, which has seen my career evolve.

WN: Can you share a little about your career journey to date?

I started as a graduate at Mars more than 30 years ago and progressed through multiple sectors and divisions including foodservice, petcare and grocery food. I left as sales director for Mars Drinks and joined Britvic where I gained my first proper insight into the wonderful world of wholesale as wholesale director – and wholesale has continued to be a dominant sector in my career portfolio.

From Britvic, I’ve held leadership roles in Kerry Foods, Danish Crown and DCS Group, with a common theme being building teams and leading change.

WN: What have been your most important learnings from these roles?

You are only as good as your team, and that the clarity and confidence you create as an authentic leader is your competitive advantage. Acting with integrity and proactively building trust internally and externally is essential, particularly in wholesale, as commercial growth is linked directly to a collaborative understanding and truly powerful relationships.

WN: Who or what was your driving force?

I have my own relentless dissatisfaction and passionate curiosity that drives me forward! Industry role models have included Fiona Dawson at Mars, and I continue to be inspired by the amazing Debbie Robinson at Central Co-op.

WN: Have you experienced any challenges as a woman in wholesale?

I have often been the only female in commercial top-to-top meetings and at industry conferences, and over the years, I have had to overcome challenges such as being excluded from conversations and undermined in meetings. I’ve also received attention that was slightly too friendly… In every instance, I have tried not to take the challenge personally and instead, look for the positives and potential advantages.

WN: Could you see other women succeeding?

Absolutely! Wholesale is an amazing sector to work in. There is a unique entrepreneurial spirit, great opportunities for growth and tangible commercial difference that you can make.

WN: What is the greatest piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Be the change you want to see. I was introduced to Stephen Covey’s Principle Centred Leadership at Mars, and it has continued to guide and shape my approach to leadership – and life!

WN: Can you share your top tips for women looking to progress in their careers?

Build a brilliant support network to advise, support and inspire you when you need it. My female industry network has helped me at every single stage of my career. Building that network through initiatives such as Women in Wholesale is the secret magic that you need to be your best self.
