Brakes batter fish rivals to win seventh award

Everyone at Brakes is riding on the crest of a wave after being named as the MSC UK Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year for the seventh straight year.

The foodservice company was recognised for providing the best fish of the, er, year as a virtual MSC UK Awards, with the accolade being given for its commitment to quality and breadth of product range.

The award night was, ahem, streamed from the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, with Brakes and its partner, M&J Seafood, taking the gong.

When it came to measuring the scale of the competition, MSC Senior Commercial Officer for UK & Ireland, Loren Hiller, said it was Brakes’ sustainability work that led them to the top of the class.

“At a time when supporting sustainable fisheries is more important than ever, Brakes and M&J Seafood have continued to show leadership in offering customers traceable, sustainable seafood,” said Hiller.

“I’d like to congratulate both businesses for helping to further our collective impact on ensuring seafood supplies are safeguarded into the future.”

To take the award for a seventh successive year was a massive achievement for the wholesaler, but Brakes’ Head of Merchandising for Fish and Seafood, Ben Wheeley said their not fin-ished yet.

“At Brakes, we are committed to sourcing our products responsibly, and to protecting the natural resources of our planet,” said Wheeley.

“This includes our efforts to source ethical and sustainable fish and seafood, and our work with organisations such as the Marine Stewardship Council.

“We’re proud of our continued support of the MSC’s efforts and delighted they have recognised our efforts with this seventh successive award.”
