Turton joined Alliance Stores as non-exec director

Former Sugro Managing Director Neil Turton has joined Alliance Stores as a non-executive director.

Turton officially left his role with the Nantwich-based buying group in April – having previously planned to leave in 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit – and had announced on his personal LinkedIn page that he’ll “work with people I like on things I enjoy” in the future.

And after announcing a part-time non-exec director role with Ty Nant Water, he’s taken a similar role with Alliance Stores – an independent, locally owned and managed retailer.

An ex-Chair of the Association of Convenience Stores representing 35,000 stores, Turton has 35 years’ worth of experience in wholesale and retail, most notably as CEO of Nisa Retail.

“Being a non-executive director can mean many things. In this case, it’s about working with Andrew [Bagot, Alliance Managing Director] and his executive team to make sure we have the right industry visibility, profile, networks, supplier relationships, external partnerships and innovation,” said Turton.

“We will be working hard to ensure that, faced with rising costs of living on the Channel Islands like everywhere else, we offer the best proposition to our customers in both Jersey and Guernsey and develop a future-proof strategy.”

Alliance started with one large out-of-town supermarket in Guernsey, which has expanded into convenience retail in Jersey, with stores opening in St. Helier and one out-of-town in St Ouens.

Supply partnerships with Waitrose in Jersey and Musgrave in Guernsey have recently been signed to improve Alliance’s offer alongside a historic membership of Nisa.
